Thinking creatively can save you space and assure that your belongings
remain damage-free during storage and moving.
- Box everything that you can
Using boxes whenever possible will prevent your clothes from being snagged,
your stereo equipment from getting dusty, and your books from being
torn and yellowed during storage. Pack the heaviest things on the bottom,
medium weight next and lightest on top.
- Don’t over-pack a box
Packing a box tight will ensure that it remains undamaged during storage,
but over-packing can damage the box, which risks the contents being
damaged. Also, make sure your boxes are still easy to carry and rearrange.
Heavy items should be packed in small boxes on their own.
- Label every box
Labeling your boxes will help you keep an inventory of what you have,
and also help you locate something quickly if it suddenly becomes necessary.
- Wrap fragile items
Wrapping your furniture in cloth blankets will prevent it from being
scuffed. Wrapping mirrors and picture frames with bubble tape and stacking
them upright will prevent damage.
- Pack furniture to save space
Removing table legs and stacking chairs seat to seat may help you get
more out of your storage unit.
- Remove dangerous fluids
Motorcycles, cars, lawnmowers, and other machinery must be drained of
all fluids prior to storing. Also dispose of old paint and cleaning
fluids, as these can be flammable and are not worth risking the value
of the rest of your belongings.
- Use climate controlled storage when necessary
Temperature and humidity in these units are carefully controlled to protect items that could get damaged by climate extremes. Fine wood or leather furniture, photographs, books, clothing, artwork, and other valuables are all susceptible to extreme temperature and humidity damage. Be sure to ask if climate controlled storage is right for your belongings.
